Software Updates

Vector checks for a newer release from the Help menu and installs it in place.

  • Menu → Help → Check for Updates starts a check at once and opens the Check for Updates window.
  • Vector also checks at startup. A check that finds a newer release opens the window on its own.
  • What the check asks. It asks the update addresses for product id 97 (0x0061) for the newest Vector release, and compares it against your version. Nothing is downloaded yet.
  • Which releases are offered. Every machine is offered 1.x releases.

One line of state, then Check Now, Install Update and Close.

  • Checking for updates… — the request is in flight.
  • You’re up to date. — nothing newer.
  • Update available: {version}, with Published: {date} under it where the release has a date.
  • Update check failed. and Update install failed. — in red, with the reason below.

Check Now is disabled while a check or an install runs, Install Update until one is available.

Close hides the window. A check already in flight runs on, and the Help entry will not reopen it until then. Open it again after that. Closing clears nothing.

  1. Choose Menu → Help → Check for Updates.
  2. When the window shows Update available: {version}, click Install Update.
  3. Four phases follow:
    • Preparing update… — the bar shows Preparing download… and Waiting for download to begin….
    • Downloading update… — {downloaded} / {total} with a percentage, and Time left: {…} or Time left: calculating….
    • Verifying update… — Verifying package… and Checking update integrity…, the integrity and signature check against the product’s public key.
    • Installing update… — Installing files… and Applying update….
  4. On success the window shows Update installed. Restart the app to finish. On Windows the installer restarts Vector. Elsewhere, quit and open Vector again.

Menu → Help → About Fetch Media Tools | Vector opens the About dialog and shows the product name and the version.

That number is the version field of GET /api/status. See the Web Control API page to ask a machine you cannot walk up to.

  • Update checking is part of the application, and Check for Updates is always in the Help menu.
